Discover the meaning of the First Communion 2016/05/26

 

In the Italian religious tradition, the First Communion is an important event in our children’s life.

It is the moment when, for the first time by themselves, they get the Eucharist.

The term Eucharist comes from the Greek “eucharistia” and means, “to give thanks”.

The Eucharist institution goes back to the Last Supper, during which Jesus distributed bread and win as his body and soul in sacrifice for the salvation of men. For this reason Easter and First Communion are tightly related.

The church, today, celebrates Eucharist precisely for the legacy left by Jesus himself.

For children who face this Sacrament a special ceremony is organized: dressed in a white robe, they receive from priest the blessed communion bread.

Eucharist is always preceded by a catechesis course, during which children understand the symbols and ways of celebration and meaning if the gesture they will have to face.

After the solemn liturgy, for the families, it is the moment of great celebration: the child gets gifts from friends and family.

The average age for the first communion is between 8 and 10 years old; Aside from the classic jewelry, in the latest years children get technological gifts, which often it is risked to exaggerate from it.
