Origin of Father's Day 03/11/2011

Father’s Day is coming up, a great celebration especially in a society where the father figure is again revalued within the family context.

Father’s Day is a civil anniversary spread around the world and in Europe it’s only celebrated in some countries, in different days and ways that vary from one country to another. In countries that follow the American tradition, this party is celebrated the third Sunday of June. In the Netherlands it’s celebrated on June 18th the same as in English-spoken countries.

Just when this tradition came to Italy, it was decided that it would be more appropriate to celebrate it on the day of Saint Joseph’s party. In the popular tradition, Saint Joseph, Mary’s husband, is the “earthly” father of Jesus, therefore, an emblematic figure to occupy this position!

Initially, Father’s Day was declared a national festive day, but with the passing of time it was repealed, however the occasion remains so families, and specially children, could celebrate their fathers.

Unfortunately there has been a decrease in interest towards this festivity. Despite this, it doesn’t mean that fathers don’t appreciate this celebration, on the contrary, maybe this pushed to a side trend makes the festivities and unexpected presents from their own children, a little more pleasant.
