Halloween crafts: Haunted house tutorial 2021/10/19

Halloween is near and I want to share a task you can do with the kids.

It can decorate a corner in your home or it can be a center piece in your Halloween buffet table: let’s build a haunted house together by recycling empty rolls and cardboard.

Material:

  • 5 empty paper towel rolls with the same height or alternatively 1 paper towel roll and 7 toilet paper rolls
  • Strong cardboard (I used a shoe box)
  • Black paperboard
  • Colors and black, brown and white tempera paintbrushes
  • Correction pen and white crayon
  • Scissors and multitask knife
  • Ruler
  • Hot glue
  • Lights with batteries
  • Close-up model

Mark 4 paper towel rolls by the middle and cut them to obtain 8 rolls; you will need 7. If you are using the toilet paper ones, this is not necessary.

Incise 2 of these in an end to form a medieval battlement (like in the photo).

Protect the table and paint with the back color. Both towers must be painted inside.

Cut this particular form (you can save the image and use it as pattern) on a cardboard that will be used to separate both floors of the haunted house and paint the front and back parts with black.

Cut other cardboard of about 12 cm X 30 cm which will be the supporting base of the house. Paint giving small taps immersing it in the three tempera colors to give a shadow effect: it will look like a dry and careless garden of a real haunted house.

Until these parts are dry, draw and cut a semicircle of 20 cm in length and 10 cm in height of the black cardboard. If you are not sure of doing it freehand, you can use a compass. Turn the semicircle on itself and superimpose the ends creating a cone. Secure with hot glue.

Pierce the paper rolls with the cutter. In the opposite direction, draw with white pastel the large windows on the towers and small windows on the house roll and 4 rolls. Carefully cut out and retouch with black color if necessary.

With the correction pen and white crayon, draw the windows and some details: add a cat, bricks, spiderwebs, a climbing plant and some cracks. In the roll without pierces, draw the entrance door.

With hot glue, place 5 rolls in the base of the garden. In the center place the door and other 2 rolls in each side.

Paste the cardboard of the first floor.

Paste the cone with the long roll and place it over the door and finally place the towers at the sides.

Last detail: insert the lights in the holes previously made in the back of the parchments and your haunted house will be finished.

This is the final effect.

With soft room lights, this will create a really nice ambience if you place the decoration on the table.

You can prepare your Halloween party with the Haunted House theme, the party kit is available in our store for automatic download after purchase.
