How to create cardboard paper Butterfly Wings 2015/02/2016

We’ll make butterfly of fairy cardboard wings

To complement a carnival costume, just add a tulle skirt and ballerina tights

Last minute idea to have a costume!

Measurements can be adapted (for girl or adult)

Necessary materials:

  • 1 sheet of cardboard paper in a flashy color
  • Pieces of colored paper contrasting with the cardboard color
  • Setsquare or ruler
  • 2 newspaper sheets, the largest ones
  • Pencil (I used a white pencil)
  • Silk tape or organza, as long as the circumference of the chest plus 10 cm.
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Paper pattern

Instructions:

Download, print and cut the pattern Tempo di Fest offers!

Take the newspaper sheet folded in half and draw the wings on it

Now that you have the exact measure for the wings, copy them on the second sheet of newspaper, if necessary make them larger with the help of the setsquare or ruler

Also correct the distance between the wings, placing the pattern somewhat distant to the center fold. Now you have a larger model to be able to draw in the cardboard paper folded in half

Attention, I enlarged the model directly on the cardboard paper, always folded in half, thanks to practice I’ve acquired with various tests I made before!

To enlarge I’ve tried to cover all the available space in the cardboard paper, marking with pencil a dot at the top height, the center and the lower part, to later join the dots following the figure

Cut the wings, open them and in the center part, where a sort of rectangle is formed, make two vertical cuts, one at each end

Take the tape and put it in one of the cuts and do the same in the other side

The wings are done, you can decorate them by gluing pieces of colorful paper or with glitter

With the tape/string tie the wings at chest height. They are ready to fly!

Tip: if you make the wings to big, they could turn out very heavy to stay in vertical position, in this case form a wing with cardboard and glue it to the cardboard paper ones to reinforce them

Use the wings in a carnival or as an accessory for Butterfly and Fairy themed parties!
