Correct feeding: Breastfeeding 2015/11/27

Breast milk is the best nourishment the baby can consume, when this is possible, because it is complete with all the nutrition elements in the correct proportions and the right temperature.

Nevertheless, for you new mom, natural breastfeeding can represent a moment of joy and fear: have they latched correctly… how do I position myself…? These are all valid and acceptable questions…

Here are some suggestions…

If the baby latches correctly, their mouth will be completely opened, their chin will touch your breast and you will be able to see the upper part of your nipple, not the lower part. Don’t worry about their nose… its ‘potato’ shape allows them to squish it against the breast and to breathe correctly.

When it comes to the position during breastfeeding, the first rule is to get confortable and to not look at the clock. Each mom with their baby will now how to adapt to the best position according to their needs.

Figure 1:The rugby position is recommended for those who had a C-section or a twin birth (to breastfeed the babies simultaneously), but also to ‘empty’ the breast correctly.

Mom holds the baby with the corresponding arm of the breast and the feet of the baby are towards the back.

Figure 2: The laying down position is ideal for the night or when you are particularly tired: lay down on one side with your baby in front of you, abdomen to abdomen.

Figure 3: The ‘crib’ position is the most popular and classic position, mom is seated supporting the baby to the breast of the corresponding arm, abdomen to abdomen. To help the baby, the breast can be directed towards the baby’s mouth with the other hand

Breastfeeding, even with a bottle, goes further than feeding your baby… it means to know them, understanding their times, their costumes, familiarizing with them, protecting and satisfying.
