SOS Tips to do homework without drama 09/13/2019

School starts again after the lovely summer passed and the nightmare of doing homework begins again.

How to do it without drama for our children... and over all for us...?

Here are some practical tips from mom to mom...

The days certainly do not help us: they are still wonderfully summery but relentlessly academic...

Waiting for the teacher clemency at least during the weekend, remember the 3 keywords: calm, patience and rationality.

  • Keep calm because with the sun shining, your child won’t read books easily. If you have a garden or a terrace, why don’t you do your homework outdoors?
  • Have tons of patience because remember that your children did a complete restart in their head about all that was done during the last school year.
  • Be rational, reasonable and comprehensive because in fact... with this sun.. let’s be honest, even you wouldn’t like to study!

Deep breath and find an adequate moment for them to do their homework: it doesn’t have to get done rapidly, for example, just before going out or after lunch. Let the kids play, spend a little time in front of the tv after eating or going for a walk or a playing a video game.

It’s useful to have fun and stay away from books they just put into their backpack!

Establish a time so the start of homework is strictly respected. After homework there will be time to go out and play, for sports or courses or for all the upcoming activities.

Mom I’m hungry/ thirsty/ sleepy/ I have to pee.

Obviously, given it’s the hour following lunch, it’s prohibited to eat to not interrupt the homework. At midafternoon they can have a snack, but until then, lunch will have their little tummies satisfied!

For thirst, well, in first place, pay attention to what you make for lunch because some foods cause thirst (for example, sausages, burgers, sweet drinks, candy, chocolate) and leave a glass of water on the table so the kids don’t have to get up every time to get it.

And if they are sleepy? Besides from a light lunch that doesn’t cause drowsiness, suggest going to bed early at night and you’ll see that often the sudden tiredness will disappear...

Regarding physiological needs, they have to be respected unless it is to go pee every 10 minutes with the sole purpose of taking a few steps. Propose to use a diaper and you’ll see it won’t keep working! Hahahaha

To carry out the homework well, you need a luminous environment, comfortable for the height of the table and the chair and especially quiet to stimulate concentration. When your children have acquired their study method, they can listen to a background... I right and read better with a music background.

But when one is in school age, silence is better, without little brothers or sisters who bother and without visiting relatives.

Let’s not interfere, we don’t look behind them at what they are writing... we stay in the area, read a book in silence sitting not too far away and hope for a possible request for help.

Some positivity and encouragement isn’t bad: let’s try to encourage our children!

“I’m sure you know how to handle this problem” or “let’s go, you are almost finished! These are little magic words that help.

And, above all, we remind our children that if they avoid distractions, huffing and complaints, the development of homework will be smooth and fast... or at least we hope so!
